Accidental Sexiness

Invisibility cloak to really be made? August 11, 2008

Ripped from the pages of Harry Potter, scientists are trying to create an invisibility cloak!  They have created so-called “metamaterials” that reverse the direction of light, while another uses tiny silver wires, both at the nanoscale level.

Each new material works to reverse light in limited wavelengths, so no one will be using them to hide buildings from satellites, said Jason Valentine, who worked on one of the projects. “We are not actually cloaking anything,” Valentine said in a telephone interview. “I don’t think we have to worry about invisible people walking around any time soon. To be honest, we are just at the beginning of doing anything like that.”

Is that even really a good idea?  It’s one thing for a movie fan to go out and re-create the “Batmobile” but do we really need to be making something like an invisibility cloak that in the wrong hands could create utter disaster? Should scientists be spending money and time creating something that could be the ultimate weapon for bad?

I remember when I was younger and watched “Back to the Future” and there were rumors about scientists creating the hoverboard. That at least would bring us hours of fun and not imminent destruction! Am I the only one that thinks this is crazy?
