Metallica drummer feeling economic pinch? October 10, 2008

Is Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich feeling the pinch of this shitty economy?  Maybe.  He s selling a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting from his art collection that could set a new auction record for the artist, Christie’s said Friday.

“Untitled (Boxer)” was painted in 1982 by Basquiat, a graffiti artist who died of a drug overdose in 1988 when he was 27. It depicts a black heavyweight fighter with his arms thrust in the air against a graffiti-filled background.

“As a collector I view myself as a caretaker of works of art, rather than simply an owner,” Ulrich said in a statement issued by Christie’s. “I have been fortunate enough to have shared 10 great years with this truly iconic painting by Basquiat, and it is time to put it back into circulation, and let someone else enjoy it as much as I have over the last decade.”

The painting is said to fetch up to $12 million dollars!

Madonna auction breaks new record! May 23, 2008

The Material Girl parted with a few personal possessions — a custom-made white guitar and the contents of her handbag — at a benefit to raise money for AIDS research. She emptied her purse and came up with a magnifying mirror, hair clips, skin blotting tissues and lip gloss. She put it on the block along with a one-of-a-kind diamond-encrusted alligator bag donated by Chanel. The lot sold for $472,000. The 49-year-old singer asked the crowd not to insult her with low bids: “This lip gloss touched my lips.”

The annual Cinema Against AIDS gala, hosted by Sharon Stone, is one of the hottest tickets at Cannes each year, with hundreds of guests traveling to nearby Mougins for an auction dinner held in a giant marquee.

The rich and famous lined a packed red carpet on Thursday, including Madonna, Diddy, and Stone, actor Dennis Hopper, Harvey Weinstein and actress Natalie Portman.

“I hope we all leave a little poorer,” said amfAR chairman Kenneth Cole in his opening speech.
