I’ve always loved Tom’s original version of the song but John really knows how to take a good song and make it his own. People might base their opinions on their own biases but if you want to just chill out at some cafe and you have your ipod on, listen to John Mayer’s version. If you want to cruise around in your car, listen to Tom Petty’s.
But to give props to both of these guys: The two of them perform incredibly in front of live audiences. It shows that they have actual talent. None of that overly-done digital editing stuff.
But thanks for showing us John Mayer’s version. I haven’t heard of it until now and I love it.
You’re welcome! I know exactly what you mean. When I am just kicking back and chillin I listen to John Mayer but if I’m driving to the beach or something Tom Petty would be my choice.
As long as Mayer doesn’t try “Mary Jane’s Last Dance!” I don’t think he would do that one justice!
It’s hard to pick a better one. They are both great for different reasons and I agree with both of you on your sentiments.
We have both versions in our house. The hubby bought Petty years ago and I have JM. An interesting thing happened the other day, hubby turned on the CD player–yes, we still have one–and immediately put it on JM’s version!
JM live is quite fantastic by the way. I have some vids I took at one of his shows on my blog if you want to see other covers he does.
